Few years ago it was noted that some of the hotels guests suffering from rheumatoid ,rheumatism and psoriasis, showed a dramatic improvement during their short stay at the resorts. The Ministry of Scientific Research delegated the National Research Centre (NRC) to perform a survey about the discovery. A group of specialists from NCR, supervised by NCR president Prof. Hany El Nazer, were sent to Safaga and the results were presented at a press conference in June 1995.    

The study revealed that the affection rate of rheumatoid and psoriasis between the inhabitants of the area was radically smaller than the international average. Only the 0.014% of the locals presented rheumatoid compared to the international rate that reaches 1% of the world population. And only 0.008% was affected by psoriasis, compared to an international percentage of 1 to 3%. Subsequently, two groups of selected patients underwent four weeks of medically supervised treatment for psoriasis and rheumatoid in Safaga. From the 109 cases of chronic rheumatoid arthritis, 84% showed sensible improvement, 14% were completely cured after four weeks, and 64% showed constant improvement with follow-ups. From the 80 cases of psoriasis, a stunning 90% of patients had an excellent improvement, an achievement hardly obtained with drugs and without the undesirable side effects of drugs such as liver and immune system impairment.

These positive achievements are believed to be the result of Safaga's location and climatic peculiarities. Safaga is located in a large bay surrounded by high mountains, which protect it from wind and sand storms. Thus, the air is devoid of any suspended grime, which diverts and absorbs ultraviolet rays essential for the treatment of psoriasis. The calm bay waters reflect UV rays further. The high salinity of seawater allows the body to float
 easier on surface, improving blood circulation therefore speeding up the healing process.



The analysis also proved that the local sand contains small concentrations of certain radioactive elements


 and minerals very effective in curing several diseases
